The Serie A season is starting to get interesting as it draws closer and closer to its end. The race for the Champions League places is still very much alive and two of the challenging sides face off on Sunday as AC Milan and Inter play in one of the world’s biggest derbies.

STATS

  • AC Milan have seen marked improvement this season as they sit 3rd in the table behind runaway leaders, Juventus, and 2nd-placed Napoli. Their form of late has been much improved with five wins from their last five in the league to propel them into a commanding position. They survived late pressure last time out to beat Chievo 2-1.
  • Inter had managed to keep pace with Napoli for a large part of the campaign but have now slipped down into 4th where they are in real danger of another season of Europa League football. They’re on a run where they have won just three of their last eight in the league although they did pick up all three points in their last game against SPAL.
  • Krzysztof Piatek has been fantastic this term and was of course signed by Milan in January. He has 19 league goals, level with a certain Cristiano Ronaldo.
  • Mauro Icardi has been widely criticised for his attitude this season but is still Inter’s leading scorer in the league with 10 goals.

HEAD TO HEAD

The Milan derbies have been so tight in recent years but it is Inter who have the slight advantage. They have lost just one of the last six in all competitions but with three draws, they only have two wins of their own. They came out on top in the last meeting back in October where they won 1-0. There have been over 2.5 goals in four of the last seven but just two goals in the last three combined.

AC MILAN NEWS

Milan will take a huge step towards confirming a top-four place with a derby win on Sunday. They are without the injured Giacomo Bonaventura while Christian Zapata is a doubt.

INTER NEWS

Three points for ‘the away side’ will take them into 3rd and put them in the driving seat for a Champions League place. Sime Vrsaljko will miss out while Icardi, Miranda and Radja Nainngolan face late fitness tests.

SUMMARY

As ever, it is very hard to choose between these two sides as they both fight for one of the two remaining Champions League spots. Milan certainly have the advantage with the San Siro full of their fans so backing the home side might be worth backing. The last three meetings have seen little in the way of goals so under 2.5 goals looks good value.
