A mini midweek matchweek in Ligue 1 kicks off on Tuesday as two sides hoping to comfortably beat relegation face off: Bordeaux travel to Angers.

  • Angers will be satisfied with their season so far as they some breathing space between themselves and the sides in the bottom three. However, without a win in their last five in the league, they are beginning to be pulled into a dogfight at the bottom. Although, with five draws in that period, they are unbeaten in the last six.
  • Bordeaux, on the other hand, would have liked to have been pushing up into the top half of the table as they sit 13th. They’ve won just one of their last nine league games but have had to balance it alongside Europa League football as well as securing a place in the Coupe de la Ligue semi-finals after a 1-0 win against Le Havre.
  • Stephane Bahoken is Angers’ leading scorer in the league this term and a large portion of his five goals have come at vital times.
  • Bordeaux’s main source of goals has come through Francois Kamano who has been enjoying a purple patch with eight league goals and three others in all competitions.

Meetings in the league have been limited with Angers competing in the lower divisions for many years. However, they are yet to lose to Bordeaux since their top-flight debut in 2015 with two wins and four draws in the six matches. The last three have ended in stalemate with the last meeting, back last March, being particularly boring as it finished goalless.

A home win would take Angers above Bordeaux into 12th whilst putting even more space between themselves and the drop zone. They are expected to be without four players as Loic Puyo, Ibrahim Cisse, Yoann Andreu and Vincent Pajot are all in line to miss out.

Three points for Bordeaux would see them move into 11th and close the ground on the top half. Younousse Sankhare and Aurelien Tchouameni returned to training this week while Pablo and Zaydou Youssouf are still unavailable.

It’s a tough game to call on Tuesday night as it could easily finish as a repeat of the most recent meeting with no goals from either side. Neither side has had a game involving more than two goals since the beginning of December so backing a low-scoring game looks to be very wise while Bordeaux will be slight favourites against a side that have only known how to draw in recent weeks.
