The World Cup is now just a matter of days away and in the build-up to every major tournament, there are the international friendlies. Tuesday night sees Argentina face Haiti as they prepare for their exploits in Russia in a couple of week’s time.

  • Argentina couldn’t have come any closer to lifting the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 as they were beaten in the final in extra-time by Mario Götze and Germany. However, qualification this time around wasn’t as straightforward as everyone expected and they had to wait for the final game to confirm their place. Of their last four friendlies, Argentina have won two and lost two, the most recent one was an embarrassing 6-1 loss to Spain.
  • Haiti have made it to one World Cup, in 1974, but they were knocked out in the 4th round of qualifying in their attempt to make it to Russia. From the CONCACAF section, Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama made it through with the latter qualifying for their first ever World Cup. This will be their first match of 2018, in their last one, they beat UAE 1-0.
  • There’s some extreme firepower in Argentina’s attack with Lionel Messi, Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Higuain and Sergio Aguero all in the squad.
  • With a small population, good footballers at a premium in Haiti, Duckens Nazon is a hot prospect. The Oldham Athletic loanee scored a brace in Haiti’s 3-3 draw with Japan.

The two nations have met twice on the international stage, once in a friendly and in Haiti’s only ever World Cup appearance. At the 1974 tournament in Germany, Argentina ran out 4-1 winners while in the friendly back in 2010, it finished 4-0 to the South Americans, who had fielded a very weakened side. A similar result this time around isn’t expected to be much different.

While Mauro Icardi is the big omission from the Argentina squad, Aguero is recovering from a knee injury so won’t feature against Haiti. A full-strength starting XI isn’t expected from Argentina.

This game is nothing more than a good experience for the Haiti players who will love to be playing against a squad that may feature a certain Lionel Messi.

There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that Argentina will win this one, it’s just a matter of how many they will win by. It’s a training exercise more than anything else for the hosts ahead of what could be a huge tournament.
