Radjia Nainggolan’s goal at Udinese meant Roma took full advantage of Juventus’ defeat at Fiorentina. It was their third straight win and leaves the gap at the top of Serie A at just one point. Roma has won 12 consecutive home games in the league, including a 3:2 win over Sampdoria in September 2016. Mr Roma, Francesco Totti, is expected to start in attack with Stephan El-Shaarawy while Thomas Vermaelen and Bruno Peres return to the defence. Alisson may come in for Polish international Szczesny in goal. Mo Salah is definitely out, away at the Africa Cup of Nations while Perotti and Fiorenzi are expected to be missing through injury.
Sampdoria is struggling this season with 1 win in their last 7 Serie A games. Fourteen points clear of the relegation places; they are probably safe, so the Coppa Italia represents a chance for success. Both of their wins in the competition have been 3:0 but both were at home, and Roma are a higher class of opponent. Matias Silvestre returns from suspension in what is expected to be an unchanged team from Sunday’s 0:0 draw with Empoli. Viviano, Sala and Carbonero are all still on the injured list. Coach Marco Giampoli will be hoping Muriel and Quagliarella repeat their goalscoring form in Rome; both scored in the 2:3 defeat earlier this season.
It’s hard to see beyond Roma winning in this one. Sampdoria is in poor form, and while the home side is likely to be much-changed, the Giallorossi will be too strong. Recent history suggests +2.5 goals, but Samp has only scored more than once away from home all season and has kept 4 clean sheets in the last 7 games. A low-scoring Roma win is likely with -2.5 goals.
