The 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia is within touching distance after four years of waiting and it promises to be a good one. One of the tournament favourites, Brazil, face Austria in their final warm-up match.

STATS

  • In a World Cup qualifying group that proposed the chance of a place in Russia, Austria failed to impress and finished 4th as Serbia locked down top spot. In their five friendlies since missing out on the World Cup, Austria have won all five. They pulled a great result out of the bag last Saturday as they beat another tournament favourite, Germany, 2-1.
  • Brazil cruised through South American qualifying and were the first nation to secure a place at the World Cup, other than the hosts. In their five friendlies, they have won four and drawn one with that draw coming against England at Wembley. When they faced Croatia last Sunday, the Brazilians comfortably won 2-0.
  • Marko Arnautovic led the way in front of goal for Austria in qualifying as he scored four goals, more than any of their other players.

With seven goals in Brazil’s 18 qualifying matches, Gabriel Jesus was their leading scorer with seven goals, followed by Neymar and Paulinho who both netted six.

HEAD TO HEAD

These two nations have faced on three occasions and Brazil won all three times. Two of those came at World Cups, in 1958 and 1978 where the South Americans won 3-0 and 1-0 respectively. They played a friendly in November 2014, Brazil won 2-1 thanks to Roberto Firmino’s late winner. Austria did beat a South American giant at the end of last year as Uruguay were beaten 2-1.

AUSTRIA TEAM NEWS

Despite not having a World Cup to prepare for, Austria have selected a full-strength squad as they look ahead to future tournaments. Arnautovic and David Alaba will provide the main threats for the hosts.

BRAZIL NEWS

Brazil may decide to rest a few of their bigger stars as injuries could seriously harm their chances of World Cup triumph. After signing for Man United last week, Fred is unlikely to feature for the visitors.

SUMMARY

With Austria having good form and a strong squad selection, they certainly shouldn’t be written off in this friendly against Brazil, who will be looking to maintain a conservative approach. Brazil should have enough quality to win but it won't be as clear as most people will be expecting.
