This week sees the final match week of the UEFA Champions League groups and some teams are still vying for qualification to the knockout phase. Two of the favourites face off on Tuesday as PSG make the trip to the Allianz Arena in hope of securing their place as Group B leaders, despite already being theoretically out-of-sight with a goal difference of 23. Bayern Munich are behind them in second place and their place in the knockout is confirmed.
The two sides have played each other just three times in the Champions League as they faced off in the 2000/2001 group stages as well as this season’s. The teams won one match each back at the start of the 21st century, Bayern won theirs 2-0 while PSG won their home match 1-0. We haven’t yet seen a match between these two sides where they have both scored and this could be the first one to see that happen. Goals from Dani Alves, Edinson Cavani and Neymar helped PSG to a 3-0 win over the German giants back in September.

A win for Bayern in the match against PSG wouldn’t see them move up the group but it would bring them some pride that they have missed this season. They may struggle without their first-choice goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer or their star midfielder, Thiago. Arjen Robben and Juan Bernat may also miss out.

A 100% group stage record is still up for grabs for PSG and they won’t want to let that opportunity slip as they look to win their first ever Champions League trophy. They are joined by Manchester City as the only two sides who can win all of their games. The visitors have a fully-fit squad for the game and will take plenty of confidence into it. In the last few seasons, Bayern would go into this match as strong favourites but with the power shift to the French capital, PSG will be expecting a sixth consecutive victory in Europe. The hosts have been off-colour this term and their misery in the Champions League might be worsened on Tuesday night, but they certainly shouldn’t be ruled out.
