Argentina take the short trip to Bolivia as they look to get their qualification campaign properly back on track after scares of them not actually making it to next summer’s World Cup in Russia. The visitors managed a 1-0 win over Chile last week which has helped revive their bleak qualifying run as they moved back into 3rd. Bolivia are second bottom of the South American qualifying group and definitely won’t be in Russia next year.

STATS

  • As mentioned, Argentina haven’t been as comfortable as they could’ve been and have made their task much harder. In their last 6 qualifiers, they have won 2, drawn 2 and lost 2 and their 2 wins have come in their last 2 games, which shows just how bad a situation they were in before wins over Colombia and Chile.
  • Bolivia haven’t had much to cheer about with only 1 win in their last 6. The win against Paraguay was a particular high point and a game that they weren’t expected to win at all. They were edged 1-0 by Colombia in their last match.
  • Lionel Messi is Argentina’s main danger man and is absolutely unplayable when he’s in top gear but for the national team in recent years, he hasn’t reached this top gear. However, it was his penalty that saw his country just squeeze past Chile in the last game, which turned out to be a huge goal.
  • Marcelo Moreno, who is currently plying his trade in the Chinese Super League, will be Bolivia’s go-to man in attack and will need to take any chances he gets if they are to come away from this one with any points.

HEAD TO HEAD

In the 13 meetings between the two countries since 2000, Bolivia have only won on one occasion as they beat Argentina 6-1 in 2010! The last meeting ended with Argentina winning 3-0 and they have scored 3+ goals in 3 of the last 4 games without conceding in any of the games.

BOLIVIA NEWS

There’s absolutely no doubt that Bolivia will have to be at their best if they are to even get a draw from this game but with Argentina’s inconsistency, they might have a glimmer of hope. Marcelo Moreno will be a big part of any hope that Bolivia get and he will need to bring his shooting boots to react and punish any Argentina defensive errors, which are fairly common. It will one of the greatest nights in the history of the Bolivian national team if they manage to beat the World Cup finalists.

ARGENTINA NEWS

Argentina shouldn’t have too many problems with beating their opponents but complacency is something that they have regularly shown throughout this qualifying campaign and they can’t show any of it in this one. A strong attacking display will blow Bolivia away and they are certainly capable with Messi, Di Maria and Dybala to name a few.

SUMMING UP!

In a game that should and will be a routine win for Argentina, they can really build some confidence with 2 wins in this international break. It will give them more stability as they were struggling to get into a qualifying place just a few months ago. Argentina will be expected to have a no mercy attitude so expect plenty of goals from the likes of Lionel Messi. If they play how they have done in some of their games, they could get themselves in some unneeded trouble but they should have far too much quality for Bolivia.
