The 2018/19 Serie A campaign is getting very interesting as it nears its business end. Cagliari and Inter kick off the weekend’s action as they face off on Friday evening.

  • Cagliari have had a particularly mediocre season so far and while they seem to be doing enough to avoid relegation, they need to pick up quite a few more points as they currently sit 14th. They’ve won just one of their last seven in the league which has seen them slip closer to the drop zone. They were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Sampdoria last time out.
  • Inter have enjoyed a good campaign and are on course for a place in next year’s UEFA Champions League but they are only three points ahead of 5th-placed Roma. After just two wins in their last six, they have allowed the sides below them to gain some ground and they let a two-goal lead slip in their last match which led to a 3-3 draw with Fiorentina.
  • Leonardo Pavoletti has steered Cagliari away from the bottom three and he is their leading scorer with nine league goals.
  • Surprisingly Mauro Icardi is on the same total for Inter and they will be hoping he can increase his tally if they are to secure a top-four finish.

Inter have dominated the recent meetings between the sides as they have won five of the last six including each of the last four. Those four wins have all been by at least two goals as they have scored 14 over the course of those matches. There have been over 2.5 in six out of the last seven league meetings, although the only one with fewer than 2.5 was when they last met back in September where Inter won 2-0.

Three points won’t take Cagliari any higher in the table but they will increase the gap between themselves and the sides below them. Alessandro Deiola is suspended for the clash whilst Cyril Thereau, Alberto Cerri and Valter Birsa all face last fitness tests.

It seems too late in the season for the visitors to catch Napoli in 2nd but they can hold onto 3rd spot and a win will enhance those chances. Sime Vrsaljko remains out for the season as Andrea Palazzi, Mauro Icardi and Balde Diao Keita are all doubtful.

In spite of their recently poor form, Inter are still favourites to come away with all three points on Friday night. Both teams have scored in each of the last four meetings at the Sardegna Arena and that should continue in this one with neither side being particularly strong at the back this term.
