The 2016/17 La Liga season is drawing to  a dramatic close and it’s advantage Real Madrid in the race for the league title. They visit Celta Vigo in their penultimate league game with a game-in-hand on the current league-leaders, Barcelona. As they are level on points with their huge rivals, a win against Celta Vigo will take them top of the league with 3 points separating them and Barcelona. After a great Europa League run, Celta Vigo have been poor in the league and are currently 13th, with nothing left to play for.

  • After they put their focus on reaching the Europa League final, Celta’s form in the league has been sacrificed. They’ve lost each of their last 5 La Liga games and have conceded 9 goals in their last 3. This shouldn’t be made any easier by the explosive Real Madrid frontline.
  • While Real Madrid have sailed into the Champions League final, they’ve been just as strong in the league recently. They’ve won 4 of their last 5 in the league with the 3-2 El Clasico loss to Barcelona being their only loss. An emphatic 4-1 win over Sevilla in their last match showed they have the mentality of champions.
  • Iago Aspas has been in incredible form for Celta Vigo this season and with 18 league goals, only Messi, Suarez and Ronaldo have managed more La Liga goals.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo has shown that even at 32 his goal scoring form hasn’t slowed down at all. He’s scored 22 league goals, making him Real Madrid’s leading scorer in the league this season.

Real Madrid have won the last 5 league meetings between the two sides and they’ve scored 17 goals in these 5 games. However, it was Celta Vigo who overcame Real Madrid in their two-legged Copa Del Rey tie back in January as they won 4-3 on aggregate.

While there isn’t anything left to aim at for the hosts, they’ll be desperate to put a stop to Real Madrid’s title push. A win against Real Madrid would be a great late season sign-off in front of their own fans but it will be an extremely tough task. There’s a couple of absences in the Celta Vigo squad for this game as Giuseppe Rossi and Ruben Blanco miss out through injury.

Zinedine Zidane will have to find the perfect balance between fighting for the league title along with the Champions League trophy. The visitors probably won’t field a full-strength team at Celta Vigo to guard against injuries and fatigue going into the Champions League against Juventus. With Pepe and Carvajal already injured, they won’t want any of their other key players picking up knocks so some players will definitely be rested.

With a Champions League only a few weeks away, it won’t be plain sailing for Real Madrid to win this game. Celta Vigo have little motivation to perform to their best but a win against Real Madrid in front of their own fans would be a great end to the season. The visitors are still huge favourites going into the game as a win is vital to their title hopes and I fully expect them to pick up all 3 points and take the top spot.
