After a busy summer of football so far, the schedule only gets more hectic as the domestic season moves closer. Celtic are in action on Wednesday night as they face Rosenborg in the first-leg of their Champions League second round qualifier.

STATS

  • There were absolutely no shocks last season for Celtic as they romped to yet another Scottish Premier League title. Despite the appointment of Steven Gerrard as Rangers manager, they are still big favourites to regain the trophy. They made no mistakes against Alashkert in the first round, beating them 6-0 on aggregate to advance.
  • Rosenborg are certainly in the hunt for their league title with just two points separating them and 1st-place Brann after 16 games. It was actually the Scottish champions who knocked them out of the Champions League last term in the third qualifying round after a narrow -1-0 aggregate win.
  • Scott Sinclair was Celtic’s leading scorer last year with 19 goals in all competitions, closely followed by Moussa Dembele with 17.
  • Rosenborg have struggled to find a prolific goalscorer since the turn of the year, Alexander Søderlund is leading the way with just six.

HEAD TO HEAD

As mentioned, these two sides last met just a year ago in the same competition, just at a slightly later stage. It was Celtic who came out on top with a 1-0 away win in the second-leg after a goalless draw at Celtic Park. The only other meetings before then came in 2001, still in the Champions League, but in the group stage. In the home leg, the Scots won 1-0 but Rosenborg won 2-0 when they played in Norway. However, neither side made it to the knockout stages with Celtic claiming third place ahead of the Norwegians.

CELTIC NEWS

Brendan Rodgers’ side must get a positive result in the first leg in front of their own fans but they are without Dembele for the clash which could harm their chances going forward.

ROSENBORG NEWS

A win or draw would be fantastic for Rosenborg heading back to their own place for the second leg, even an away goal or two would keep them in the tie. They have two injured players for their trip to Glasgow with Anders Konradsen and Samuel Adegbenro unavailable.

SUMMARY

Wednesday’s hosts must avoid defeat in this first leg and are certainly favourites to go into the second leg with a lead of some description. Rosenborg are expected to stay defensive in order to give them a chance of progression which may lead to a low-scoring game. The visitors might even steal a goal on the counter-attack with Celtic looking to control the tempo.
