The 2017/18 Proximus League season is in full flow as every team has played each other already due to the division containing just eight teams. One of the strongest sides so far, Cercle Brugge, who are looking for promotion to the top flight, host Leuven who are hot on their tails. The hosts are second with 15 points while their upcoming opponents are just two points below them in third place.

STATS

  • Despite occupying second place in the table, Cercle Brugge have already lost three of their eight matches in the league as well as a 1-0 loss to Genk in the last 32 stage of the Belgian Cup. They have struggled to keep the ball out of their net after conceding 12 goals in their eight games, a 2-1 win over Union Saint-Gilloise showed an example of a goal that shouldn’t have gone in.
  • Leuven have been unconvincing in the league so far this term and with more draws than wins, they are lucky to be in third place. Like their opponents, they are also out of the Belgian Cup after a 4-2 loss to Sint-Truiden but they have been defensively stronger in the league. They have conceded nine goals so far and a 2-0 win over Roeselare meant another clean sheet.
  • Three players in the Cercle Brugge squad are tied for the competition as their top goal scorer. Stephen Buyl, Xavier Mercier and Guevin Tormin have all notched three goals, they will be hoping to add to this against Leuven.
  • Yannick Aguemon has been in great scoring form for Leuven this season so far and with five goals, there is only one player who has managed more goals in the league. He will be vital if his side want to win this one.

HEAD TO HEAD

Cercle Brugge haven’t been great against Leuven in recent years and with just one win against them at the last 12 attempts, dating back to 2012, they will be looking to turn it around. Of those 12 matches, Leuven have won eight which includes the last meeting where they came out emphatic 7-1 winners back in August. Both teams have scored in just one of the last six fixtures involving the sides with more than 1.5 match goals on two occasions.

CERCLE BRUGGE NEWS

A win for the hosts in this match could see them go level on points with league leaders, Beerschot Wilrijk but due to their poor goal difference, they can’t overtake them at the top. They need to improve their defensive frailties if they want to finish the season in first and this must start against the teams around them, this game is the perfect chance.

LEUVEN NEWS

Three points for the visitors would mean they would go second and leapfrog Cercle Brugge but they need to turn their draws into wins if they want to stay there. No side in the league has drawn more matches than them and with four draws, they are struggling to grind out wins.

SUMMARY

It certainly isn’t clear cut as to who goes into this match as favourites as there are claims for both sides. Purely due to the home advantage, Cercle Brugge should be slight favourites but they have already shown their inability to beat Leuven this term as they lost 7-1 against them last time. The game rarely produces goals so expect to see the game won by the odd goal.
