There are a lot of European leagues that are back in action after a summer dominated by the World Cup in Russia. Over in Belgium, Club Brugge play host to Eupen on Sunday afternoon in the Pro League.

  • Club Brugge begin a new campaign after winning the league title last season by just three points. Because of their league triumph, they don’t have to worry about qualifiers for the Champions League as they have automatic access to the group stage. Before they’ve played a league fixture this term, they have some silverware as they beat Standard Liege 2-1 in the Belgian Super Cup.
  • Eupen were extremely lucky to avoid relegation last season as they finished on the same amount of points as the side that went down, it was their goal difference which was better by just one goal that kept them in the top-flight. Like Brugge, they are yet to have played a league fixture this season after winning all four of their pre-season friendlies.
  • Only four players in the Pro League last term scored more goals than Club Brugge’s Abdoulay Diaby who managed 15 goals in the league.
  • Eupen also had an African player to thank as their main source of goals last term. Mbaye Leye was their leading scorer with nine league goals.

Due to Eupen’s lack of time spent in the Pro League, the matches between these sides are relatively few and far between. In the six league meetings, Club Brugge have won five and drawn one which came in the most recent of the games in December. The only win Eupen have got against Brugge was in the Belgian Cup in 2016 where they won 3-2 after extra-time. All seven of the mentioned games have had over 3.5 goals and both teams have scored in six of them.

It’s important that Club Brugge start their title defence with three points and they have a great chance to do just that. However, they have Brandon Mechele, Marvelous Nakamba and Krepin Diatta injured while Anthony Limbombe should return.

For a team that almost got relegated, playing the reigning champions away from home isn’t the ideal start. Their only injured player is Ibrahim Diallo.

It’s hard to see anything other than a comfortable Club Brugge win in this season opener. It could be a high-scoring match with the recent meetings all having plenty of goals and Eupen should be hopeful of a goal after scoring in six of the seven
