It’s the second international break of the 2017/18 season and there are still plenty of World Cup places yet to be taken. One nation who can confirm qualification with another win is England and they host Slovenia at Wembley. Slovenia can still qualify and a win over England could take them into second place in Group F. England are top of the group and three points would get them over the line for a place in Russia next year.

  • England haven’t been as convincing as most of their fans would have wanted but they are still unbeaten in the eight matches they have played in the group with six wins. They drew games with Scotland and Slovenia earlier in the qualifying process and they were less than impressive despite beating Malta 4-0 in their last fixture.
  • Slovenia have done well to still be in contention for a World Cup place in quite a tough group. They have won four, lost two and drawn two of their eight games. The losses against Scotland and Slovakia were disappointing and could have ruined their chnaces of making the World Cup. They eased past Lithuania in their last match as they beat the minnows 4-0.
  • After his two goals in the last game against Malta, Harry Kane has joined five players on three goals in Group F, no player has scored more in the group than the Spurs striker.
  • Josip Iličić is one of those players on three goals and he has been one of Slovenia’s stand-out performers during their group matches.

England and Slovenia always seem to get drawn in the same qualifying groups whether it’s for the European Championships or the World Cup. The best result the Slovenians have got in the five previous meetings was the goalless draw last October. They have played each other four other times and all four ended in England victory, none of them by more than 2.5 goals.  There have been more than 3.5 match goals in two of the three meetings.

A win for England would see them cruise into the group stage of next summer’s World Cup in Russia but they need to get past Slovenia first. Fabian Delph and Phil Jones have dropped out of the squad which has paved the way for Harry Winks to make his first first-team appearance. Jamie Vardy wasn’t selected due to a groin injury.

Slovenia need a win to keep their hopes of qualifying alive but they’ll be up against it at Wembley. With Atletico goalkeeper, Jan Oblak in goal they have a safe pair of hands between the sticks and he could be the difference.

At Wembley, there aren’t many visiting sides that go into the match as favourites and this match is no different. Slovenia certainly aren’t a bad side but they will struggle especially against the home support of the English fans. Although it should be a routine victory for Gareth Southgate’s men, they aren’t expected to win by more than 2.5 goals and it could turn out to be another narrow win for the Three Lions.
