La Liga is back after the season’s first international break and it’s taking off from where it left. One of the ties of matchweek four sees Espanyol play host to Celta Vigo. Neither side have started the season particularly well as the visitors sit 12th with three points while hosts are much worse off in 18th with just one point.

STATS

  • In their very first match of the 2017/18 season, Espanyol looked like they might enjoy a decent campaign with a 1-1 draw against Sevilla before losing 1-0 to Leganes and then a 5-0 hammering from Barcelona followed. This has seen them drop into the relegation places, somewhere that they really don’t want to be at the end the season.
  • Celta Vigo have been disappointing so far this term and with two losses from their first two, it looked bleak. A 3-2 defeat to Real Sociedad and a 2-1 loss to Real Betis was followed up with a narrow 1-0 win over Alaves before the break. After a poor start, last season’s Europa League semi-finalists will be desperate to pick up three points against Espanyol.
  • As they have only managed one goal so far, they have just one goal scorer on the list for the golden boot. This solitary goal was scored by Leo Baptistao against Champions League contenders, Sevilla.
  • There is only one player in the Spanish top flight with more goals than Celta’s Maxi Gomez and that player is Lionel Messi. With three goals, Gomez has made a great start to the new campaign.

HEAD TO HEAD

Meetings between Espanyol and Celta Vigo have been fairly even in the last five years. During that period, there have been ten matches with Celta winning four, drawing three and losing three. In those ten games, both teams have scored on four occasions and there have only been more than 2.5 match goals on three.

ESPANYOL NEWS

It is vital that Espanyol pick up their first win of the season if they want to propel themselves away from the drop zone. Their striker, Alvaro Vazquez, is expected to return to the side after dislocating his shoulder which is a boost. However, they are still without Oscar Duarte and Javi Lopez due to cruciate ligament and hamstring injuries respectively.

CELTA VIGO NEWS

After their great run in Europe last term, the Celta Vigo fans will be dreaming of a return but they need to drastically improve their form if they want that dream to become reality. John Guidetti and Facundo Roncaglia have returned to training this week after injuries but Nemanja Radoja won’t be in the reckoning for a place in the squad.

SUMMARY

Due to their superior squad and marginally better run of form, it should be Celta Vigo who come way from this fixture with all three points but they will up against it with the home support of Espanyol. Celta should have too much quality to win the game but they need to be wary of Espanyol on the counter-attack. It won’t be a classic by any means.
