As the UEFA Champions League moves into the second week of the knock-out stages, FC Porto host Italian champions, Juventus. Both teams will be hopeful of making the next round, which happens to be the quarter-final and Porto need to take their home advantage in the first leg through to the away fixture if they want to progress. Juventus will be looking to pick up an important away goal or two to give them a vital advantage as they go back to Turin.

  • Porto’s last game in the Champions League was an emphatic 5-0 victory over Group G winners and Premier League champions, Leicester City, the win that saw that qualify for the knockout stages in their final game. Porto only lost one match out of their 6 group games, which came away at Leicester, Porto ended up getting through 2 points ahead of 3rd-placed Copenhagen.
  • Juventus’ last game in the competition was a convincing 2-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb, a game that meant nothing in terms of qualification as they had already gone through to the knockout stage. Juventus went all 6 games unbeaten with 4 wins and 2 draws, a set of results that saw them coast through to the last 16, 6 points above Lyon, who finished 3rd.
  • Andre Silva is Porto’s top scorer so far in the Champions League with 4 goals which were vital to Porto making it through. He also laid on two assists for his team-mates, making him Porto’s danger man in this year’s competition.
  • Gonzalo Higuain scored 3 goals in the group stage, which makes him Juventus’ top goal scorer in this season’s Champions League. If they want to make it to the stage they’re looking to reach, Higuain will need to chip in with more goals for his side.

Juventus and Porto have faced each other just twice in the Champions League where Juventus won the home tie and the sides drew in Porto. This was all the way back in 2001 so Porto will be hoping to record their first win over Juve.

Porto fans will be happy to see that they have a full team available in order to take a win into their second leg against Juventus. They have a completely full team to choose from as they are without any injuries and suspensions, giving them a better chance of coming away from the fixture with a lead heading into the second leg.

However, it’s not just Porto that have a fully available squad at their disposal as Juventus also head into the first leg in Portugal without any suspensions or injuries. This gives them just as good a chance of taking a lead into the second leg in their own back yard.

Both sides will be eager to progress to the quarter-finals of this season’s UEFA Champions League and in order to do so, they will to get a strong result going into the second leg. Juventus will want at least one away goal while for Porto, a win and a clean sheet would be perfect. The task for Juventus is much easier and due to them having a much stronger team on paper, they shouldn’t have too many problems taking a lead back to their ground. I fully expect to see Juventus win this first leg.
