The Swiss Super League season is over and Young Boys got their hands on the title after winning it by 15 points. They will be hoping to complete the domestic double on Sunday as they face FC Zurich in the Swiss Cup Final.

STATS

  • It’s been quite an incredible season for Zurich as they have secured a place in the Europa League just a year after they being promoted from the Challenge League. They knocked out Thun and Grasshopper in the quarter and semi-final on the way. The came from a goal down in the last round and had to rely on a last-minute winner to see them through in emphatic style.
  • Young Boys went one better than they did in the 2016/17 campaign as they went from runners-up to champions. They also knocked out last season’s Swiss Cup winners, Basel in the semi-final in February. Two second-half goals in the space of 10 minutes confirmed their place in this year’s final and a great chance at lifting the trophy.
  • Michael Frey was Zurich’s leading scorer in the league with 12 goals, he’ll be relied on as the main attacking threat on Sunday.
  • Young Boys have five players that have scored 10 or more goals in the Swiss Super League this term. Guillaume Hoarau got the most in the team with 15, only one player scored more in the league.

HEAD TO HEAD

The head-to-head records don’t make good reading for Zurich fans as they have failed to beat Young Boys in their last seven encounters. Of the four meetings in the league since August, there was one draw and three Young Boys wins, all of which by just one goal. Sunday’s underdogs have scored just twice in their last six fixtures against Young Boys. Zurich will take confidence from the fact that they’ve lost one of their 10 finals in this competition while Young Boys have lost seven of their 13.

ZURICH NEWS

Zurich have won this cup nine times so they’re no strangers to a Swiss Cup final. However, they have seven injured players and one suspended for the match. Kevin Rüegg and Victor Pálsson both picked up knocks a couple of weeks ago and aren’t expected to return.

SUMMARY

Based on performances in the league this season, it should be Young Boys who are huge favourites but on cup history, Zurich should win. Nine Swiss Cup final wins and just one loss provide a boost for Zurich while the fact that Young Boys last won it in the 80s will also bring confidence. It could easily go to extra-time but Young Boys do hold the advantage.
