With Christmas just a matter of weeks away, the Eredivisie nears its annual winter break which begins on the 24th. On Thursday night, Feyenoord play host to Venlo as both sides play the game-in-hand they have on every other team in the division.

  • Feyenoord are currently 3rd in the Dutch top-flight but can’t jump into the places above them with a win on Thursday. They’ve won four of their last five games in the league but the one they lost was against one of their direct title rivals, Ajax. They did record a huge win last time out as they beat PSV 2-1, the other side above them in the table.
  • Venlo have enjoyed a decent start to the campaign and as we near the halfway mark, they are 7th. They’re in decent form recently and have won three of their last five in the Eredivisie, a run which has taken them towards the top end of the table. Although, they were comfortably beaten in their last game by Heracles who came out 4-1 winners.
  • Robin van Persie might not be as young and agile as he once was but he is still Feyenoord’s leading scorer this season with six league goals.

A player with just one less goal is Venlo’s top scorer Peniel Mlapa whose form has been vital to his side’s run of good results.

You would have expected Feyenoord to have dominated the recent matches against Venlo but as both sides have won two of the last five, it couldn’t be more even. In the most recent fixture, back in February, it was actually Venlo who came out on top as a late penalty gave them a 1-0 win. Under 2.5 goals have been scored in each of the last three meetings despite both teams scoring on one of those occasions.

As mentioned, a Feyenoord win would only see them close the gap on Ajax and PSV ahead of them but they desperately need to do so. Ridgeciano Haps isn’t ready to return yet while Nicolai Jorgensen may come back into the squad for the match.

Due to their inferior goal difference, Venlo won’t be able to move up the table but they can go level on points with Utrecht and Vitesse in 5th and 6th. Both Peter van Ooijen and Roel Jansenn are suspended for the match whilst Danny Post is not yet fit to return.

31.10.2018 KNVB AZ Alkmaar VVV Venlo 2:0 L
26.10.2018 Ered FC Emmen VVV Venlo 1:1 D

Despite Venlo’s upturn in form, this game is certainly Feyenoord’s to lose and they will be expected to cruise to another valuable three points. It looks to be a low-scoring fixture as the last three meetings have been so backing Feyenoord to win to nil looks good value.
