It's hotting up in La Liga as we get closer to reaching that elusive annual winter break and the Monday match sees Alaves make the trip to Girona to face one of this season's surprise packages. Girona are 12th in the table after a fantastic start to the campaign while Alaves are cut adrift at the foot of the table, six points from safety.
Most of the meetings between these sides have come in the second division of Spanish football and Monday's game will be the first in the top-flight. In the last two fixtures, they have one win apiece, both by a 1-0 scoreline. These came in the 2015/16 season and it was Juli who scored the winner for Alaves in their win as three men were sent off while Lekic got the only goal of the game when Girona won. In the nine matches between Alaves and Girona, there have only been two where both sides have hit the back of the net.
A win for Girona would put them in a very good position at this stage of the season as they would definitely go at least 8th in the table (and 7th with a big enough win). They are lucky to not have any injuries to worry about and they could use this to their advantage as they look to climb even further up the league.

If Alaves were to pick up an unlikely win, they would move off the bottom of the table and leapfrog Malaga in 19th but it will take at least two wins to get them out of the drop zone. Not only do they have nine players unavailable for the clash, their top scorer is suspended for the next match. Latest matches: CD Alaves

Against a very poor and out-of-form Alaves side, Girona are strong favourites to win this game, especially in front of their home fans. Alaves won't put up much of a challenge and are expected to be comfortably beaten by an in-form Girona side who can move into the top eight with a win.
