The 2017/18 Serie A season has turned into a two-horse race between Juventus and Napoli for the title and Juve are pulling away. The fight for the Champions League places is still very much alive and as it stands, Inter will miss out as they are in 5th. They face Cagliari, who are 14th, on Tuesday night, hoping to put more pressure on Roma and Lazio.

  • For a season that started so promisingly for Inter, it could finish with them left empty-handed if they miss out on the top four. Their form hasn’t been good enough recently as they are without a win (or a goal) in their last three matches. They struggled to break down a resolute Atalanta side last time out as they drew 0-0.
  • Cagliari have been unspectacular this term but they will be satisfied knowing there’s a slim chance of being relegated from their current position. They have two wins from their last five which has taken them further from the bottom three. Their 2-1 win over Udinese last week was impressive, especially because they had to come from a goal down.
  • Mauro Icardi has had a great season and has been Inter’s main source of goals with 24 in the league. Only Ciro Immobile has managed more Serie A goals than the Argentine.
  • With nine goals in the league, Leonardo Pavoletti is Cagliari’s leading marksman and he’ll be hoping to add to surpass double figures by the end of the campaign.

Inter haven’t been as dominant against Cagliari in recent seasons as you’d expect with two losses in the last five league meetings. They have won the other three though and this includes the last meeting in November where they ran out 3-1 winners way from home. This means that both teams have scored in each of the last seven Serie A meetings, with over 2.5 goals in the last five.

Without Roma or Lazio playing on Tuesday, this is a great chance for Inter to go 3rd which they will do with a draw or win. They will take confidence from the fact that they have everyone available.

A win would only take Cagliari one place higher in the league table but it would be a huge step to confirming their safety. Luca Cigarini and Nicolò Barella are suspended while Daniele Dessena, Alessandro Deiola and Diego Farias are doubts ahead of the game.

At the San Siro, Inter should have no problems coming away with a valuable three points. Cagliari will struggle against the quality of the hosts’ squad and won’t be expecting to take anything away from Milan. It’s a game that usually produces goals and this one could follow that pattern.
