The fight for Europe and the relegation battle in Serie A are both getting very exciting as the 2018/19 season edges closer to its end. Two teams involved at either end of the table are in action on Thursday evening as Empoli face Napoli away from home.

STATS

  • Lazio have struggled to stake a proper claim for a top-four place so far this term as they sit just outside the European spots in 7th. They’ve won just once in their last four games and have had two players sent off in that period of time. That victory came last time out as they beat Frosinone 1-0 away.
  • Empoli are fighting to retain their status as a top-flight club for next season on the back of their promotion. They are currently outside the relegation zone but they are in 17th and just one point separates them from the drop. They haven’t won a single game in their last seven with their last one coming in early January. They came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Chievo in their last game.
  • There are no shocks to see that Ciro Immobile is Lazio’s leading goalscorer this season but he hasn’t netted as many as he usually does with 11 at this stage.
  • Empoli’s marksman, Francesco Caputo, is the main reason as to why they are outside the bottom three and he has the same amount of goals as Immobile with 11.

HEAD TO HEAD

As is to be expected, Lazio have been dominant in the meetings between the sides in the last few years. They have won each of the last four and Empoli, including the narrow 1-0 win at the start of the campaign. Empoli haven’t won away from home against Lazio in Serie A and they have failed to score in their last four visits. There have been over 2.5 in just one of the last five meetings with both teams scoring on one occasion.

LAZIO NEWS

A win for Lazio would take them into 4th ahead of the rest of the weekend’s fixtures. Marco Parolo is out through suspension whilst Immobile, Luis Alberto and Jordan Lukaku will all face late fitness tests closer to kick-off time.

EMPOLI NEWS

An unlikely victory for the visitors would only take them one place higher in the table but they are in desperate need of the points. Lorenzo Polvani is out for the campaign and Antonino La Gumina isn’t expected to be risked.

SUMMARY

Lazio will be very confident of picking up all three points on Thursday despite being out of form. The fixtures between these two teams don’t tend to produce many goals so backing a Lazio win and under 2.5 goals looks a decent price.
