The race for the Premier League title dominates the headlines at the moment but a busy weekend of English football kicks off at the King Power Stadium on Friday night. Newcastle United travel to Leicester City in a game that could have big European implications.

STATS

  • Leicester have been in much better form since the appointment of Brendan Rodgers and they are right back in contention for 7th place. They’ve won each of their last four games after losing their first under the former Celtic boss and were rampant last time out, beating Huddersfield 4-1 away from home.
  • Newcastle still aren’t completely clear of relegation and will need a few more points to make sure of their top-flight status. With just one win in their last five, they will certainly be looking down the table instead of looking up it. They lost in their last match as Crystal Palace stole a 1-0 win at St James’ Park.
  • Jamie Vardy is a new man under his new manager and has six goals since Rodgers' arrival, with 16 goals for the season he has an outside chance of winning the Golden Boot.
  • Newcastle’s leading goalscorer is Salomon Rondon who has nine league goals.

HEAD TO HEAD

Leicester’s form against Newcastle has been great in recent years as they have won five of the last six meetings between the sides, including the reverse fixture earlier in the season where they ran out 2-0 winners. The Magpies did win on their last trip to the East Midlands at the end of last season. There have been over 2.5 goals in four of the last six fixtures with both teams scoring in just two of them.

LEICESTER CITY NEWS

The hosts can strengthen their grip on 7th place with a win on Friday night and they are boosted by the returns of both Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire in the backline. Marc Albrighton is still sidelined though.

NEWCASTLE NEWS

A victory for the visitors would see them take a huge step to confirming their safety and Mo Diame is expected to return to the squad after missing out last time. Florian Lejeune injured his knee and will not feature for the rest of the campaign.

SUMMARY

Leicester’s great form against Newcastle over the last few years is expected to continue on Friday as they hunt for a return to European football. The Foxes have conceded in four of their last five victories and I expect that trend to continue with the away side posing attacking intent of their own. Vardy will be hopeful of continuing his red hot form so backing him to score in a Leicester win provides good value.
