Following seven Ligue 1 matches on Saturday, there are three more on Sunday and one of the biggest in the French footballing calendar. The Choc des Olympiques is that fixture and Marseille travel to Lyon in the late kick-off.

  • Lyon will be disappointed with their start to the 2018/19 season after a good end to the last one. They do have a game in hand over the majority of the sides above them but sit 10th after five fixtures with seven points. They have already been beaten twice this term, as many times as they have won and last time out in the league, they could only manage a 2-2 draw with 10-man Caen. However, they did beat Man City 2-1 away from home in the week.
  • Marseille have been better than their rivals and with 10 points from five matches, they are still very much in the hunt around the top of the table. They have won one more game this term than their opponents and they were emphatic in their last league match, hammering Guingamp 4-0 at home. Although, they got off to a losing start in the Europa League on Thursday, losing 2-1 to a Frankfurt side who were reduced to 10 men.
  • Lyon have scored six goals so far in the league this season and only one of their goalscorers has more than one: Bertrand Traore.
  • Marseille have more than double that amount and only PSG have scored more Ligue 1 goals. They have the league’s top scorer in Florian Thauvin who has five goals as well as Dmitri Payet who has three himself.

This long-standing rivalry has been an ever-present fixture in Ligue 1 history. As the pendulum has swung over the years, it is currently Lyon who are enjoying the better run of form, winning each of the last three league games against Marseille and haven’t been beaten by them since the end of the 2013/14 season. The most recent meeting ended 3-2 to Lyon back in March thanks to Memphis Depay’s 90th-minute winner. There have been over 2.5 goals in just two of the last eight meetings, both teams have scored in four.

A win for the hosts could take them up to 5th in the table but it would have to be by 3+ goals to leapfrog Marseille. They only have two players out for the clash: Amine Gouiri and Fernando Marcal.

The visitors will go 2nd in the table if they win on Sunday and can potentially cut the gap between themselves and PSG to just two points. They are without Adil Rami, Rolando and Steve Mandanda for the game as all three are nursing injuries.

Both sides will be feeling the effects of European fixtures in midweek but with an extra day’s rest, Lyon go into the match as slight favourites despite a worse start to the campaign. With Marseille’s goalscoring exploits this term, it’s hard to see them failing to score and a score draw is the most likely outcome. Either a 1-1 or 2-2 scoreline looks like good value in this full-blooded French derby.
