The international break is finally over and normal service resumes across Europe. After France secured qualification to the World Cup in Russia next year, French football returns and one of the biggest clashes in matchweek eight in Ligue 1 sees Monaco make the trip to Lyon as both sides look to put the pressure on the sides above them. Monaco are second and can overtake PSG at the top of the league if they win, while Lyon can take third place with three points despite currently occupying eighth.

  • It looks set to be another frustrating campaign for Lyon as they have struggled to turn draws into wins. With four draws from their first eight matches, only one side in Ligue 1 have drawn more. With three draws and just one win in their last five, they are finding it hard to keep pace with the sides above them. They disappointingly drew 3-3 with Angers in their last match, a game where they were leading 3-1 at one point.
  • Many pundits expected Monaco to struggle after losing several of their key players over the summer but they have picked up from where they left off last term. They have won six of their opening eight matches however a 4-0 demolition from Nice was extremely disappointing. They let a one-goal lead slip in the 92nd minute of their last game against Montpellier.
  • Mariano has started this season in very good goalscoring form and with six goals in the league, only two players in the top flight have scored more.
  • One of those players is Falcao and he already has 12 goals in just eight matches. The former Manchester United striker is one of the best strikers in the world at the moment.

Lyon and Monaco are two of France’s biggest clubs but it’s the former who take the spoils in the meetings between the sides in recent years. In the last six, Lyon have won two, Monaco have won one and there have been three draws. Both teams have scored in four of the last five and the most recent fixture ended with Monaco winning 2-1 courtesy of goals from Falcao and Kylian Mbappe.

Head to head matches: Olympique Lyon - AS Monaco

23.04.2017 Ligu Olympique Lyon AS Monaco 1:2

Lyon need to avoid defeat in this match if they want any chance of keeping up with the teams ahead of them. But it won’t be easy against a very strong side. With only Pape Cheikh on the injury table, they have no first-teamers unavailable for the clash.

Three points for Monaco would be ideal for them in their race for another Ligue 1 title. They are without any high-profile injuries for the match against Lyon, the only doubt is Stevan Jovetic but he should be alright to return.

16.09.2017 Ligu AS Monaco Racing Strasbourg 3:0 W
13.09.2017 UEFA RB Leipzig AS Monaco 1:1 D

With such a strong squad, it really is Monaco’s game to lose but Lyon will be fired up by their loud home fans. It won’t be a routine victory for Monaco by any stretch but they should have too much quality to come through this tough test. It is a high possibility that both teams will score but it should be Monaco who score more.
