The international break is finally over and normal service resumes across Europe. After France secured qualification to the World Cup in Russia next year, French football returns and one of the biggest clashes in matchweek eight in Ligue 1 sees Monaco make the trip to Lyon as both sides look to put the pressure on the sides above them. Monaco are second and can overtake PSG at the top of the league if they win, while Lyon can take third place with three points despite currently occupying eighth.
Lyon and Monaco are two of France’s biggest clubs but it’s the former who take the spoils in the meetings between the sides in recent years. In the last six, Lyon have won two, Monaco have won one and there have been three draws. Both teams have scored in four of the last five and the most recent fixture ended with Monaco winning 2-1 courtesy of goals from Falcao and Kylian Mbappe.

Lyon need to avoid defeat in this match if they want any chance of keeping up with the teams ahead of them. But it won’t be easy against a very strong side. With only Pape Cheikh on the injury table, they have no first-teamers unavailable for the clash.

Three points for Monaco would be ideal for them in their race for another Ligue 1 title. They are without any high-profile injuries for the match against Lyon, the only doubt is Stevan Jovetic but he should be alright to return. Latest matches: AS Monaco

With such a strong squad, it really is Monaco’s game to lose but Lyon will be fired up by their loud home fans. It won’t be a routine victory for Monaco by any stretch but they should have too much quality to come through this tough test. It is a high possibility that both teams will score but it should be Monaco who score more.
