As the 2017/18 La Liga campaign nears the halfway mark, two of the division’s struggling sides face off on Monday night. Malaga host Espanyol as they look to lift themselves out of the relegation zone, they’re currently 19th. Espanyol need to be careful that they too aren’t being dragged into a relegation dogfight as they sit 15th, with just five points separating them from the drop zone.
The recent record between these two sides doesn’t make good reading for Malaga fans as they have failed to beat Espanyol at the last 10 attempts. Their last victory against them came in March 2012, over five years ago when a certain Philippe Coutinho played for Espanyol! They are yet to have played each other this term but the last time they faced off, a single goal was enough to separate them as Pablo Piatti scored, what turned out to be the winner, in the 17th minute. Malaga have scored just three goals in the last five meetings.
One of Malaga’s main problems this season has been their injury crisis. They currently have 13 players who have either just recovered from an injury or who are still recovering. Juankar, Miguel Torres and Adrian Gonzalez are three players who are definitely injured and won’t feature while Luis Hernandez is suspended for the clash.

A win by two or more goals for the visitors take them 13th and possibly even higher if they were to score a serious amount of goals. They are without Jairo Morillas while Oscar Duarte is a major doubt. Sergio Sanchez could make a return after his injury.

Espanyol will fancy their chances of coming away with a victory in this one and why shouldn’t they, coming up against one of the league’s weakest sides. Malaga need a win and will hopefully be fired up to win in front of their own fans but it is certainly Espanyol’s game to lose, they should have too much quality to overcome the hosts.
