The Champions League make its return this week as the quarter-final stage gets into full swing. The bumper clash on Wednesday sees Barcelona travel to England face Manchester United in the first leg.

  • Until Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s appointment, Man United were having an awful season but the Norwegian boss has taken them into the quarter-finals as well as keeping them in contention for a top-four place. They made history in the last round as they overturned a 2-0 deficit in the first-leg to win on away goals at the Parc des Princes.
  • Barcelona look pretty much nailed on to win the La Liga title yet again and they are also one of the favourites to win Europe’s elite competition. They made no mistake in the last 16 as they breezed past Lyon with a 5-1 aggregate score after finishing top of their group which contained Tottenham, Inter Milan and PSV.
  • United’s goals in Europe have been spread about this season and they have three joint top scorers as Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku have two goals each.
  • No one has scored more in the competition this term than Lionel Messi who is leading the way with eight goals as well as three assists.

There have been some classic Champions League ties between these two giants over the years and Barca have the edge as they have won four of the 11 meetings while United have won three. The last two were both won by the Spanish side and they both came in the final, in 2009 and then again in 2011. The most recent was played at Wembley where goals from Pedro, David Villa and Messi handed Barcelona a 3-1 victory and the iconic trophy.

The Red Devils need to make sure they use their home advantage in this first leg and at least avoid defeat or they will have too much to do next week. Eric Bailly and Antonio Valencia are definitely unavailable while Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic are doubts.

A first-leg win for the Catalans would give them a huge advantage but they will be aiming to just avoid losing in order to have the best chance of progression to the semi-final. Rafinha is out for the season so won’t feature while Ousmane Dembele is in the squad despite being unfit.

Manchester United may have home advantage but they won’t find it easy against Barcelona who are in great form this season. Both teams will be wanting to attack from the start which is why backing both teams to score seems wise. Messi’s record against English teams is phenomenal and I expect him to be one of the scorers on Wednesday evening.
