As the final English side to be left in Europe this season, Manchester United will be hoping they can make it into the final as they face Celta Vigo in the second-leg of their semi-final tie against the Spanish side. United take a 1-0 into the game at Old Trafford after Marcus Rashford scored a brilliant free-kick in the first-leg last week. Celta Vigo certainly aren’t out of the tie yet.

  • Manchester United have struggled to balance Europa League and Premier League football this season and are outsiders for a Champions League place next season as a result of that even after their 25-match unbeaten run. This run was ended at the weekend against Arsenal as the Red Devils had clearly put their focus on Europe.
  • There’s no doubt that Celta Vigo have fully focused on getting as far as they can in the Europa League as they sit 12th in La Liga and they’ve been brilliant in Europe as they’ve played the rold of the underdog all season. They’ve lost all 4 of their last league games with all their eggs in the Europa League basket.
  • After his superb free-kick in the first-leg it looks again as though Marcus Rashford will spearhead United’s attack at Old Trafford with Anthony Martial and Henrik Mkhitaryan on either side, an early goal could kill Celta’s hopes.
  • Former Liverpool forward, Iago Aspas, has been fantastic for Celta Vigo this season and he will need to be on top form at Old Trafford on Thursday evening as he’s certainly their main hope going forward.

The only meeting between the sides was last week’s first-leg and it was, of course, Man United who came out on top. Celta will want to win their first match against the former world giants and any type of win would see the game at least go to extra-time.

Head to head matches: Manchester United - Celta de Vigo

04.05.2017 UEFA Celta de Vigo Manchester United 0:1

It shouldn’t be too much of a hard task for Man United to make it into their first European final since 2011 as they just need to stop Celta Vigo from scoring at Old Trafford, where they have kept several clean sheets in the Premier League this season. While Zlatan Ibrahimović is unavailable for the match, Paul Pogba is expected to make his return in the midfield while Man United’s defensive problems have been solved due to Eric Bailly’s return.

It’s an uphill task for the visitors at Old Trafford as they have to pull back the 1-goal deficit from the first-leg. However, if they do manage to win on the night, a 1-0 win will go to extra-time while a win with more goals will see Celta through on the away goals ruling.  The Spanish side have no injuries or suspensions, giving them the best chance to get through to their first European final.

After their 1-0 first-leg victory, Manchester United will fully expect to make it through to the Europa League final in front of their own fans and they will go into the match as favourites. Although, Celta Vigo will have a glimmer of hope of going through as Man United have been very inconsistent at home and in the Europa League this season. It should be fairly routine for Jose Mourinho’s men but Celta have a chance at a huge cup upset.
