The Premier League title race looks as though it will go right down until the final day of the season as both Manchester City and Liverpool are refusing to drop points. Arguably the biggest Manchester derby of recent years takes place on Wednesday at Old Trafford.

  • Manchester United have had a shocking season so far by their usually high standards and while they have improved since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s appointment, they are still struggling for a top-four place. They’ve won just two of their last five and were humiliated on Sunday as Everton beat them 4-0 at Goodison Park.
  • Manchester City, on the other hand, are in a great position to retain their Premier League crown. Hopes of a quadruple were shattered by Tottenham in the Champions League last week but with 10 league wins in a row, the title is in their hands. They avenged their European exit on Saturday as they were able to beat Spurs 1-0 at home.
  • A lack of a consistent goalscorer has affected United this season and it is Paul Pogba who leads the way for them in the league with 13 goals.
  • City certainly haven’t struggled with that problem as they have two players in the hunt for the Golden Boot. Sergio Aguero has 19 while Raheem Sterling has 17 in the league.

Manchester derbies are always so hard to call as either team can win on the day. Towards the end of the season last term, United were able to come from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at the Etihad but they were beaten there earlier in the season by a 3-1 scoreline. City are undefeated in their last three trips to Old Trafford and won 2-1 when they played there last season on the way to their title win. There have been over 2.5 goals in four of the last five league meetings between the sides and both teams scored in each of those matches.

If the hosts want to finish in the top four then they need at least a point on Wednesday. They might be without Ander Herrera, Antonio Valencia and Eric Bailly while Luke Shaw will probably return from his two-match suspension.

Every game is must-win for the visitors at this stage of the campaign as Liverpool are showing no signs of slipping up. Kevin De Bruyne limped off against Tottenham on Saturday so probably won’t feature but Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Benjamin Mendy could all return to the starting XI.

Usually Man United would go into a derby at home as favourites but that is far from the case in this one as they are being priced as huge underdogs. Their poor form and injuries make it hard to see past a City win and I think that is what will happen. Many are predicting a whitewash for the Citizens but United will be confident of getting a goal and I expect them to do so despite expecting them to lose.
