Following a busy start to the Danish Superliga season, cup action returns on Thursday night with arguably the biggest possible tie. Midtjylland and Copenhagen meet in the last 16 as one of the cup favourites will be dumped out.

  • Midtjylland have been brilliant so far this season and they currently occupy top spot in the Danish top-flight with 31 points from 14 games, they’ve only lost once in the league. They are on a great run of form where they’ve won each of their last five matches, they overcame Brondby last time out, beating them 3-2 at home.
  • Copenhagen have been equally as good this term and have the same amount of league points as their upcoming opponents, goal difference is the only thing that separates the two sides. Copenhagen have won four of their last five games in all competitions with the only defeat coming in the Europa League against Slavia Prague.
  • Paul Onuachu has been in good goalscoring form this term and he is Midtjylland’s main source of goals in the league with seven.
  • Copenhagen have three players in their side with at least seven league goals. Viktor Fisher has that amount whilst Robert Skov and Dame N’Doye both have nine in the league.

Games between these two teams are always interesting and there hasn’t been a draw in the last six meetings. Midtjylland have won two, both of the last two after Copenhagen won four consecutively. They met in September and Midjtylland, who were hosting the match, ran out 3-1 winners after going in at half time a goal to the good. There have been over 3.5 goals in each of the last six meetings and both teams have scored on each of those occasions.

A place in the quarter-finals for Midtjylland would give them a great chance to win the cup and maybe even the double. They have Simon Okosun and Artem Dovbyk on the injury table with neither player expected to feature.

Copenhagen are currently the team applying all the right pressure to Midtjylland in the league and they’d love to get one over on them in the cup. Their only absentee is Michael Luftner.

This really has all the makings to be a Danish Cup classic with two in-form teams who tend to score goals whenever they meet. Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals looks like it should come in as it has done in each of the last six match-ups between the sides. It’s far too hard to pick a winner even if Midtjylland are slight favourites with home advantage.
