European football is finally back on a regular basis and the 2018/19 Ligue 1 season has started in style. Sunday afternoon sees Marseille travel to Monaco to face last term’s 2nd-placed side.

  • A decent campaign for Monaco last season still saw them fall 13 points short of champions PSG in the race for the title. However, they’ve begun this season poorly and with just four points from their opening three matches, they find themselves marooned in mid-table. Their first game was a 3-1 win over Nantes followed by a goalless draw with Lille and they were beaten 2-1 last time out by Bordeaux.
  • Marseille managed to take the final Champions League place last season as they finished just a point behind rivals Lyon. Like Monaco, their start to the campaign has been lacklustre and they’re on the same amount of points after three games. They comfortably beat Toulouse 4-0 before they were taken apart by newly-promoted Nimes and they could only manage a 2-2 draw with Rennes in their last match.
  • Monaco have seemingly struggled to find the back of the net so far this term and with just four goals, they have all come from different players.
  • With seven goals from the first three fixtures, Marseille’s leading scorers are Florian Thuavin and Dmitri Payet who both have two goals.

Marseille won’t take confidence from their recent record with Monaco ahead of Sunday’s clash as they haven’t beaten the title challengers in their last six attempts. Monaco have won four of the last five meetings and all five of the last home fixtures against Marseille. It’s a game that often produces goals with over 2.5 goals in each of the last seven. Both teams have scored in six of those seven.

The hosts need to improve rapidly this season if they are to challenge at the top of the table. They are without Stevan Jovetic, Aleksandr Golovin and Andrea Raggi for the clash.

The visitors can’t afford to lose another match this early in the campaign but they’ll be right up against it in Monaco. Steve Mandanda and Rolando are unavailable for the clash.

Recent meetings between these sides have seen entertainment and goals and I expect this one to be no different. Both teams are expected to score on Sunday and despite Monaco’s struggles in front of goal, they should come away with all three points. It really is a result that could either way but backing a home win is smart.
