After every side in this season’s UEFA Champions League has now played half of their group matches, the competition is really heating up. In Group F, after three fixtures, there’s a shock as Shakhtar Donetsk occupy the second qualifying position ahead of Napoli, who are currently top of Serie A. The Italians host the group leaders, Manchester City, on Wednesday night hoping to overtake Shakhtar and close the gap on Pep Guardiola’s side.

STATS

  • Napoli have had contrasting starts to their league campaign and their Champions League one. While they are unbeaten in Serie A after dropping just two points in their opening 11 matches, they have already lost two of their three European games. In their two away fixtures in the Champions League, they lost 2-1 (to Shakhtar and Man City) but a 3-1 home win over Feyenoord means that they have got three points on the board.
  • Man City have been in top form across all competitions so far this term and like their upcoming opponents, they have only dropped two points in the Premier League and currently lead the pack. To add to this, they have a 100% record in the group stage after a 4-0 win in Feyenoord, a 2-0 victory at home to Shakhtar and a narrow 2-1 win over Napoli in their last match.
  • With just five goals in their first three matches, Napoli are struggling to recreate the devastating attacking form they have shown in the league. They will be relying on Dries Mertens to provide some magic.
  • With eight goals so far, Man City have three players tied on two goals. Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and John Stones have all hit the back of the net twice in the Champions League.

HEAD TO HEAD

This will be the fourth Champions League meeting between Napoli and Man City and each side has beaten the other on one occasion. In the group stage back in 2011, it was Napoli who made it through at the expense of Man City after beating them 2-1 at home before picking up a 1-1 draw at the Etihad. Goals from Sterling and Jesus helped City to a 2-1 win in the last meeting. With two attacking teams, both teams have scored in all three meetings.

NAPOLI NEWS

Napoli can’t afford to lose this match or they could be risking elimination from the Champions League. Even a draw wouldn’t really be good enough and with just one notable injury, they should put up a good fight. Arkadiusz Milik is the only unavailable player for the hosts.

MANCHESTER CITY NEWS

A win for Man City would secure their qualification to the next round but it won’t be easy in Naples. The only injuries for Guardiola to worry about are Benjamin Mendy and Vincent Kompany but they have enough quality to cover those positions.

SUMMARY

This has the potential to be one of the Champions League’s most exciting matches in recent years with two free-flowing attacking sides. However, with the nature of it being almost must-win for Napoli, they will want to stay tight and compact at the back. Both teams are still expected to score and a draw is the most likely outcome with it being far too hard to split the teams.
