After every side in this season’s UEFA Champions League has now played half of their group matches, the competition is really heating up. In Group F, after three fixtures, there’s a shock as Shakhtar Donetsk occupy the second qualifying position ahead of Napoli, who are currently top of Serie A. The Italians host the group leaders, Manchester City, on Wednesday night hoping to overtake Shakhtar and close the gap on Pep Guardiola’s side.
This will be the fourth Champions League meeting between Napoli and Man City and each side has beaten the other on one occasion. In the group stage back in 2011, it was Napoli who made it through at the expense of Man City after beating them 2-1 at home before picking up a 1-1 draw at the Etihad. Goals from Sterling and Jesus helped City to a 2-1 win in the last meeting. With two attacking teams, both teams have scored in all three meetings. Head to head matches: SSC Napoli - Manchester City

Napoli can’t afford to lose this match or they could be risking elimination from the Champions League. Even a draw wouldn’t really be good enough and with just one notable injury, they should put up a good fight. Arkadiusz Milik is the only unavailable player for the hosts.

A win for Man City would secure their qualification to the next round but it won’t be easy in Naples. The only injuries for Guardiola to worry about are Benjamin Mendy and Vincent Kompany but they have enough quality to cover those positions.

This has the potential to be one of the Champions League’s most exciting matches in recent years with two free-flowing attacking sides. However, with the nature of it being almost must-win for Napoli, they will want to stay tight and compact at the back. Both teams are still expected to score and a draw is the most likely outcome with it being far too hard to split the teams.
