The Czech First League is back underway after a boring summer of football in the Czech Republic with no participation at the World Cup. Plzen and Liberec meet on Monday afternoon in both sides’ second fixture of the season.

  • Plzen had a very successful campaign last season as they won the league by seven points which automatically qualified them for the Champions League group stage. Despite going behind early on in their first game of the new season, Plzen came back to win 3-1 away from home against Dukla Praha. They are 8th going into the game, the highest of any team yet to play their second match.
  • Liberec missed out on a European place by just one place last term as they finished 7th, seven points away from the Europa League qualifiers. Like their upcoming opponents, they started the season with a win against Karviná. They won 1-0 and had to wait until the 85th minute to get the only goal of the game.
  • In Plzen’s 3-1 win, both Tomáš Horava and Michael Krmenčík scored either side of an own goal to ensure they got off to the perfect start.
  • Jan Pázler scored Liberec’s only goal of their opening match and the attacker will be hoping it’s the first of many this term.

You’d have to go back five years for Liberec’s last victory against Plzen which spans a run of 12 matches. In the last seven league meetings between the sides, five of them have seen over 2.5 goals. In the return fixture last season in March, Liberec managed to salvage a 2-2 draw from 2-1 behind which will provide them with confidence ahead of Monday’s clash.

It’s vital that Plzen build on their opening game win by picking up another three points in this one. Lukáš Hejda and Daniel Kolár are both injured and aren’t expected to feature.

With three points on the board already, it would be unrealistic to expect another Liberec win here. They are without their goal scorer from the last game, Jan Pázler as he is injured.

The reigning champions should extend their winning streak to two on Monday against a Liberec side that may struggle to get any kind of grip on the game. The visitors shouldn’t be completely written off but Plzen are certainly favourites to come away with their second win of the season.
