The 2018/19 season is getting ever closer to its business end and with just 11 games left, there is still plenty to play for. Real Madrid and Celta Vigo kickstart gameweek 28 when they meet on Friday night.

  • Real Madrid will be resigned to the fact that they won’t be winning any trophies this term as they are out of both the Copa del Rey and Champions League whilst being 12 points behind Barcelona in the league. They have actually won seven of their last nine in La Liga but a 1-0 loss against their El Clasico rivals last time out has all-but ended their title hopes.
  • Celta Vigo have really struggled this season after two campaigns of over-achieving. They find themselves in the relegation zone at this stage with a point separating them from safety as a result of their awful form. With just one win in their last 12 matches, they are freefalling towards the bottom of the table, they were beaten 1-0 by Real Betis in their last game.
  • In the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema has had to step up and he is with Real Madrid’s leading scorer with 13 goals.
  • Despite his side having a bad season, Iago Aspas hasn’t necessarily suffered as he has netted 10 goals.

Celta Vigo will struggle to turn around their bad form if history repeats itself on Saturday as they have failed to beat Real Madrid at the last nine attempts in the league. They haven’t won at the Bernabeu since 2006 in La Liga. Los Blancos won the entertaining meeting back in November as they ran out 4-2 winners, one of nine in a row that saw over 2.5 goals between these teams.

To keep the pace with 2nd-place Atletico, the side above them in the table, Real Madrid must come away with all three points. Casemiro is suspended while Lucas Vazquez and Dani Carvajal are injured.

Points are imperative for the visitors in this one who are in desperate need of at least a draw. Hugo Mallo is also suspended but the big team news is the injured Aspas who is, of course, Celta’s main man.

It is so hard to see anything but a comfortable Real Madrid win in this match even though the European giants have had a poor season. They will be motivated by the re-appointment of Zinedine Zidane so backing them to win with a -2 handicap looks very realistic. Without Aspas, it’s hard to see Celta scoring a goal so backing Madrid to win to nil might also be worth backing.
