The 2. Bundesliga season is shaping up to be a good one as the climax approaches. On Monday evening, Regensburg host Greuther Fürth in a game that will be important to their promotion push.

  • Regensburg have enjoyed a decent campaign so far but in 8th place, they must put some strong results together to enhance their chances of going up. They’ve won just two of their last six in the league which won’t be good enough for them to get anywhere the top 3. They lost a lead slip last time out as they had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Duisburg.
  • Greuther Fürth will be disappointed with how their season has panned out so far as they’ve still got work to do in order to avoid relegation. With just one win in their last 10, the situation is getting dire and they must turn it around to avoid the drop. They were unlucky against one of the promotion favourites in their last match as they were beaten 1-0 by Hamburg.
  • Monday’s hosts have had the advantage of a prolific striking partnership this season as both Sargis Adamyan and Marco Grüttner have managed 10 league goals.
  • There is one player who has been hitting the back of the net with relative consistency for Greuther as Daniel Keita-Ruel has nine goals this term.

Due to the difference in the leagues the two sides have been playing in over the years, there have only been three previous meetings between them. Greuther Fürth haven’t won any of the matches, losing two and drawing one which came in the fixture earlier in the season where it finished 1-1. Both teams have scored in all three of the meetings.

A win for the home side can take them within seven points of the promotion play-off place while a loss could put a stop to their promotion ambitions. They are boosted by a fully fit squad as only Adrian Fein is a doubt for the match.

An away victory would mean they increase the gap between themselves and the bottom three to a comfortable nine points. Julian Green is suspended for the clash but Tobias Mohr and Yosuke Ideguchi have returned to training.

It’s hard to see past a Regensburg win in this one, given the gulf in quality of the squads and the previous meetings between the sides. Backing them to win looks like it will come in but if you want to increase the odds, it might be worth adding the -1 handicap.
