The battles at both ends of the table in Serie A are getting more exciting by the weekend as the race for the top four and the fight to avoid relegation are equally close. Roma, involved near the top, face Bologna, who are struggling to main their top-flight status, on Monday night.

  • Roma won’t be too happy with their season so far as they find themselves outside of the Champions League positions in 5th. However, they are unbeaten in their last six in the league with four wins and two draws. They are also balancing a run in Europe’s elite competition and they gained a first-leg advantage over Porto in midweek as they won 2-1 at home.
  • Bologna, on the other hand, have failed to put together a decent run of form this term and are in real trouble of going down as they sit 18th in the table. They have won just once in their last 15 matches with that victory coming a couple of weeks ago against Inter of all teams.
  • Roma’s absence of a prolific goalscorer has been their main downfall this season as Stefan El Shaarawy leads the way for them with just eight.
  • Bologna’s struggles have been even worse as their top scorer, Federico Santander, only has six.

In the 20 previous Serie A meetings between the two sides, Bologna have won just two. Although, one of those in the last fixture between the teams as they won 2-0 when they met back in September. Roma have won three of the last four at Stadio Olimpico with two of them being by a margin of three or more goals. There have been under 2.5 goals in each of the last three meetings.

The hosts are unable to move into the top four but they can close the gap between them and AC Milan to just a single point. They are without Cengiz Under, William Bianda and Patrick Schik.

Three points might be enough to take Bologna out of the bottom three but they will be up against it in Rome. Rodrigo Palacio is suspended while Riccardo Orsolino, Blerim Dzemaili and Geancarlo Gonzalez are all injured.

It’s very hard to see past a Roma win on Monday, the question is by how much will they win by. They have a habit of scoring a few when they face Bologna so backing them either with a -2 handicap or to score three or more goals looks good value. For a safer bet, either back them simply to win or to win with a -1 handicap.
