The last Serie A action of 2017 takes place at the weekend ahead of the winter break but before that, the Coppa Italia returns at the last 16 round. Lazio, AC Milan, Fiorentina and Inter have already confirmed their place in the quarter-final places and either Roma or Torino will take up one of the four remaining spots in the next round. They face each other at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday evening.

  • Roma have performed well in Serie A this term and with their game-in-hand, they can go within a point of league-leaders, Napoli. This will be their first involvement in the Coppa Italia as they have entered the competition at this stage. They squeezed past Cagliari thanks to a last-minute winner from their centre-back, Federico Fazio in their last match. They have won three of their last five in all competitions.
  • Torino have balanced life in the cup and life in the league well so far this term. They have got past Trapani (7-1) and Carpi (2-0) to reach the quarter-final and they will hope to upset Roma. They go into the game on the back of a 3-1 defeat to Napoli that was always expected but it’s their only loss in their last eight fixtures across all competitions.
  • Edin Dzeko will be leading the line for Roma and with eight league goals, he is their leading scorer. His presence going forward might be too much for Torino to handle.
  • Andrea Belotti is Torino’s top goal scorer in the Coppa Italia after a brace against Trapani and another goal against Carpi.

Torino have won just once in their last 15 meetings with Roma, making awful reading for their fans. However, in the Coppa Italia match almost exactly 10 years ago, Torino ran out 3-1 winners so they can take some confidence from that stat. They don’t struggle to score against Roma and have scored in five of the last six matches against them, winning just once. Roma will be very confident of a victory and this is backed up by their total domination of Torino for a number of years.

Roma may field a second-string side for the quarter-final as their attention will be firmly fixed on the league. This side should still be too strong for Torino after the first-teamers played just a few days ago. They don’t have any notable injuries to worry about, Gregoire Defrel could return to the matchday squad.

This could be a great chance for Torino to get their hands on some silverware with the top Italian teams very close at the summit. They have several injured players with Adem Ljajic being the main absentee. Christian Ansaldi, Maxi Lopez and Kevin Bonifazi join him on the injury table.

Roma will be expecting to avoid a potential banana skin in the quarter-final as they look to get past Torino and they shouldn’t have too many problems doing just that with a much stronger squad. Even against a weakened team, Torino will struggle to make the semi-final but they will give it a go. With nothing to lose against the Italian giants, the visitors might find themselves in the hat for the next round but Roma are undoubtedly very strong favourites.
