Following a fantastic summer of World Cup football in Russia, the tournament hosts are in Nations League action against Turkey on Sunday. Both sides have played twice in Group B2, Russia top the group with their upcoming opponents below them.

  • After being dumped out of their own World Cup by Croatia on penalties in the quarter-final, Russia have won two and drawn one of the international fixtures. They have four points from their opening two Nations League games, a 2-1 win away in Turkey followed by a goalless draw at home against Sweden, another side who impressed over the summer.
  • Turkey’s failure to reach the World Cup finals was seen as a disaster by the Turkish public but they’ve not shown they’re improving with just one win from their last five games. Although, that win did come in the Nations League in their clash with Sweden after they were beaten by Russia. In their most recent match on Thursday, they were held to a goalless draw by Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  • Denis Cheryshev and Artem Dzyuba were the stars of the tournament for Russia and it wouldn’t be a great surprise to see one of the two on the scoresheet on Sunday.
  • Cenk Tosun is one of many goalscoring sources for Turkey but he is arguably the most prolific, he averages 0.38 per international game.

In their five meetings on the international stage, Turkey have never beaten Russia who have won three of those. None of those fixtures have come at major tournaments with the most competitive of those coming in the Nations League where Russia came out 2-1 winners. In their other meeting of 2018, the sides drew 1-1 which was the only other game of the five where both teams scored. Over 2.5 goals have only been scored in one game, which was obviously the last match.

A win for Russia would put them on seven points at the top of the Nations League group, at least three points ahead of the other two sides. Following a strong World Cup, they are showing all the right signs of expanding on that progress.

Three points for the visitors would see them leapfrog Russia at the top of the group but it won’t be easy. They failed to qualify for the World Cup for a reason so they must rapidly improve.

Russia, with home advantage, should have too much quality to overcome a struggling Turkey side on Sunday. Despite finding it hard to win recently, the Turkish should be able to register a goal but the hosts are still expected to beat them which is why Russia to win and both teams to score might be worth backing.
