As we get closer to the Italian winter break in January, there is still plenty of football to be played in 2017 and this weekend, Lazio travel to Genova to face Sampdoria. Both teams have started well this season and are sat next to each other in the table. Lazio are 5th with 29 points while Sampdoria are 6th with 26 points. The hosts will be hoping to continue their early season push for the European places.
Lazio have dominated the recent fixtures between the sides with five wins in the last seven meetings. Sampdoria have managed just one win in this period and it came at the end of the 2015/16 season when they won 2-1. The most recent match between them both was a 10-goal thriller which saw Sampdoria on the receiving end of a 7-3 loss. Quagliarella scored two late goals to reduce the arrears after they went 7-1 down. Both sides have scored in all four of the last four games.
A win for the hosts would take them level on points with Lazio and would see them in a good position to take advantage of any poor results above them. They are without Ivan Strinic for the clash and Karol Linetty is also expected to miss out.

Lazio need to take all three points if they are to keep pace with the sides above them in the table and a win would put them two points behind Roma, who are currently occupying the last Champions League place. They will miss two of their wingers as Nani and Felipe Anderson are on the injury table, however, both are expected to return to action at some point this month.

Despite being away from home, Lazio are favourites to secure a win in this one as they look to challenge for top spot but Sampdoria won’t lie down easily. They are in very good form and will push Lazio all the way. It’s a match that could certainly go either way and with strong attacking line-ups, both sides will be looking to score early.
