FC Schalke 04

After the first four games, it is clear which sides have seized the initiation and have started to make the greatest moves at the top and at the bottom. Two of the sides who are battling at the top are Schalke and Bayern Munich, who face off in matchweek five. Only goal difference separates the sides with Schalke in fourth and Bayern slightly ahead of them in third.
It’s been a very long time since Schalke beat Bayern Munich in the league, you would have to go back to 2010 to find the last time. That’s a run that lasts 13 Bundesliga matches where Bayern have picked up 10 wins. Schalke have only scored five goals in these fixtures (across all competitions) in the last 14 games. Bayern have scored three goals in three of the last five meetings.

A win for Schalke in this one would not only give them a huge three points but also a massive confidence boost. They have a great chance of doing so with a fully available squad for the clash. Luke Hemmerich is expected to return but won’t be risked while Donis Avdijaj may also come back into the squad after a month out.

Although it’s very early in the season, this game has to be seen as a must-win for Bayern as if they don’t, they could slip four points away from the league leaders. They are missing both of their full-backs, David Alaba being the main absence. Juan Bernat also won’t feature for the Bavarians.

Usually, it would be very easy to predict a winner in this match but with Bayern Munich’s slight wobble and lack of good quality football, Schalke have the best chance of winning they’ve had in several years. With home advantage, they have an even bigger chance but with the overall quality of the visitors, Bayern have to considered as favourites. It won’t be plain sailing and the game could be decided by an odd goal.
