The 2018/19 Bundesliga season is underway and after three matches, there are some serious surprises. One of those surprises is Schalke’s form as they are yet to pick up a point, they face Bayern on Saturday who are the only side yet to drop points.

STATS

  • Following a 2nd-place finish last term, Schalke have started this season in a complete contrast with zero points on the board after three matches. They lost to Wolfsburg on the opening day before losses to Hertha and Borussia Monchengladbach ensured they are still pointless going into matchweek four. They have received two red cards in their first three games.
  • Bayern Munich, on the other hand, couldn’t have started better and hold a two-point lead over five sides who are on seven points. They have beaten Hoffenheim (3-1), Stuttgart (3-0) and Bayer Leverkusen (3-1) in the Bundesliga and in their last match they overcame Benfica in the Champions League, winning 2-0 in Portugal. 14 goals in five games is certainly a very good start to the campaign.
  • Schalke have only scored two league goals this term and they have come from Nabil Bentaleb and Breel Embolo.
  • With 12 goals so far in the league, Bayern have three players who have scored two: Arjen Robben, Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller.

HEAD TO HEAD

Schalke are like most teams in the Bundesliga in the fact that they have a poor record against Bayern. The last time they beat the European giants was back in 2011 and you have to go three months further back to find their last Bundesliga win against them. Bayern have won 13 of the 16 meetings since Schalke last beat them. There have been over 2.5 goals in each of the last three fixtures but both teams have scored in just two of the last six.

SCHALKE NEWS

Schalke’s form hasn’t been helped by a few first-team injury problems, Benjamin Stambouli and Bastian Oczipka are definitely out while Sascha Riether, Omar Mascarell and Johannes Geis are all doubts ahead of the match.

BAYERN MUNICH NEWS

Bayern have a couple of injuries to deal with but in the context of their big squad, it’s not too bad. Corentin Tolisso, Rafinha and Kingsley Coman will miss the match but Thiago Alcantara has returned to training this week.

SUMMARY

Bayern go into most Bundesliga matches as favourites and this one is no different. Schalke would usually have more chance of winning but after their shocking start, they are considered even bigger underdogs even at home. Bayern have scored three in each of their games so expect them to grab at least two goals on Saturday while it is very likely that Schalke won’t find the net.
