After four World Cup groups have already concluded, it’s time for the fifth and sixth to follow suit on Wednesday. Two of the sides in the hunt for qualification from Group E face as Brazil meet Serbia in Moscow.

STATS

  • Serbia started their World Cup with a win, narrowly beating Costa Rica 1-0 thanks to Aleksandar Kolarov’s whipped free-kick. They followed that up in devastating fashion, squandering a one-goal lead against Switzerland before conceding a last-minute winner. The Europeans must beat Brazil in their final group game to get through.
  • Brazil, like many other big nations, have failed to overly impress in their opening two fixtures. They could only manage a 1-1 draw with Switzerland in their first game before waiting until added time to squeeze two goals past Costa Rica. Because they’re currently top of Group E, Brazil just need to avoid defeat on Wednesday.
  • Aleksandar Mitrovic has looked like Serbia’s main attacking threat, he scored the opening goal against Switzerland and was very unlucky not to get a penalty.
  • Phillipe Coutinho has scored two of Brazil’s three goals at the tournament so far and Neymar got the other one. It seems it’s only a matter of time before Gabriel Jesus joins them in the Golden Boot race.

HEAD TO HEAD

The two nations have faced just once in international football and it held very little importance as it was a friendly in the build-up to the 2014 World Cup. Brazil managed a 1-0 win in their final warm-up before hosting the tournament with Fred getting the only goal of the game. The last time Serbia faced a South American team was in one of their warm-up friendlies, they were beaten 1-0 by Chile.

SERBIA NEWS

Serbian fans and players are confident of knocking out one of the tournament favourites and with a fully fit side, that confidence will be increased.

BRAZIL NEWS

There are two Brazilian players out through injury for their final group game as Danilo and Douglas Costa have a shoulder and hamstring injury respectively. Although, they certainly have enough quality to cover the injuries.

SUMMARY

Brazil are big favourites to win this game and should be able to cruise into the last 16 but with their spirited performances, Serbia shouldn’t be ruled out. If Brazil had been more convincing so far, there wouldn’t be much room for debate but their European opponents should take hope from two weak attacking showings. It has the potential to be an end-to-end game.
