This week sees the return of some of Copa del Rey action in Spain as La Liga football is put on hold for the four semi-finalists. In Wednesday’s semi-final, it is the second leg between Sevilla and Leganes, who played out a 1-1 draw in the first-leg last week. Luis Muriel opened the scoring for Sevilla before Dimitrios Siovas equalised for the hosts in the second-half. It has left this tie wide open as they meet at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.

  • Sevilla’s participation in the Copa del Rey is distracting them from their poor performances in the league as they sit 6th with six points between them and the Champions League places. Not only have they not been up to standard for most of the season but they were taken apart by Eibar in their last league match, losing 5-1 away from home. They have been much better in the cup, especially after knocking out Atletico out in the last round.
  • Leganes have started to fall further down the table after their surprisingly good start, their run in the Copa del Rey may have affected their league form. They claimed a huge scalp in the last round as they took out one of the competition’s favourites, Real Madrid with a fantastic 2-1 away win at the Bernabeu. Their last match was a very boring goalless draw against Getafe.
  • Joaquin Correa has been leading the line brilliantly for Sevilla in the Copa del Rey and there is only one player who has more goals than the Argentine forward. He has netted four goals so far.
  • Leganes have struggled for goals across all competitions this season and they’ll be looking for some inspiration in this second-leg as they could secure a place in the final.

Leganes have only beaten Sevilla once and you have to go all the way back to 1997 for that 1-0 win when both sides were in the Spanish second division. In the nine meetings between the two since then, Sevilla have won six matches and drawn three, one of the draws coming in the first-leg of this tie. They faced off earlier in the campaign in the league and Sevilla, who were the hosts that day, won 2-1. This was one of the last fixtures between Sevilla and Leganes where both teams have scored.

If Sevilla win on Wednesday night, it will be their second final in three seasons with their last participation in the final in 2016. They have only got two injured players to worry about: Simon Kjaer and Sebastian Corchia after Daniel Carrico returned to training this week.

This season was the first that Leganes have made the Copa del Rey quarter-final so it will be even more unbelievable if they manage to make it through to the final. Their three injured players might make it back in time for the second-leg. Alexander Szymanowski, Jon Ander Serantes and Gabriel Pires are in contention for the squad.

24.01.2018 Copa Real Madrid CD Leganes 1:2 W
21.01.2018 LaLi CD Alaves CD Leganes 2:2 D

With little experience in the big matches, Leganes might struggle in this huge semi-final against Sevilla. The hosts are more equipped for games like these and should be able to progress to the final. Leganes won’t be easy opposition but it should be Sevilla who make it through.
