After Tuesday night’s Ligue 1 game, the action continues on Wednesday evening and the biggest of the clashes sees Marseille travel to St Etienne trying to stop their poor run of form.

STATS

  • St Etienne will be really happy with how they have started the campaign as they sit 4th in the table. But with just two wins in their last five in the league, they are losing their grip on the sides above them. They were victorious last time out though as they defeated Guingamp 1-0.
  • Marseille, on the other hand, have been poor this term and their place in the table (9th) doesn’t lie. Without a win in their last four in the league and out of both competitions, it isn’t a campaign that will last long in the mind of the supporters. They couldn’t beat an out-of-form Monaco side last time out as they were pegged back to draw 1-1.
  • Sunderland flop Wahbi Khazri has been in great goalscoring this season and with 10 goals, he is St Etienne’s leading marksman.
  • Florian Thuavin has gone one better despite his team’s bad fortunes. With 11 goals, there are only three Ligue 1 players with more.

HEAD TO HEAD

Marseille’s league dominance over St Etienne shouldn’t go unnoticed heading into this one. At the last 10 attempts, Wednesday’s home side haven’t won; losing on five occasions as well as drawing on five. Each of the last three have produced over 2.5 goals but both teams scored in just one of those which was the most recent meeting in February where it finished 2-2.

ST ETIENNE NEWS

Three points for St Etienne would take them above Lyon and within a point of 2nd-place Lille however they are without Neven Subotic and Mathieu Debuchy.

MARSEILLE NEWS

As much as Marseille’s form is poor, a win would take them inside the top five and as only Adil Rami and Hiroki Sakai miss out, they have a great chance of doing so.

SUMMARY

In spite of St Etienne’s superior league positioning, Marseille will still be confident of coming away with all three points. Both teams to score seems like a worthwhile bet as both sides have seen plenty of goals this season. As has happened in the last three meetings, over 2.5 goals should also come in.
