It once again looks as though the Ligue 1 title race is all-but-over at the halfway stage as PSG are 10 points clear at the top with at least two games in hand on the sides below them. They face Champions League-chasing St Etienne on Sunday evening.

STATS

  • St Etienne are on course for at least a Europa League place if they continue at the same rate this term but they will be hoping to break into the top four. They have won three of their last six in the league but two losses in that time have seen them lose ground. However, they did get back to winning ways in their last match as they beat Strasbourg 2-1.
  • PSG have unsurprisingly dominated the French top-flight this term and have opened up a sizable gap at the top of the league. They’ve won five from six in the league but a loss to Lyon in that time put an end to their hopes of an unbeaten domestic campaign. They picked up a huge result in midweek as they gained a first-leg advantage over Manchester United with a 2-0 away win.
  • Wahbi Khazri has stood out this season for St Etienne and he is their leading scorer in Ligue 1 with 12 goals, only four players have managed more.
  • Three of those players belong in PSG’s frontline: Kylian Mbappe has 18, Edinson Cavani has 17 and Neymar has 13. Mbappe’s record is most impressive as he’s averaging a goal every 73 minutes.

HEAD TO HEAD

St Etienne have struggled in their matches against PSG in the last few years and haven’t beaten the champions in their last 12 attempts in the league. They were battered in their meeting earlier this season as three second-half goals handed PSG a 4-0 win. Sunday’s hosts have lost by at least three goals in three of the last four fixtures against PSG.

ST ETIENNE NEWS

An unlikely win for the home side would see them leapfrog 4th-placed Marseille in the table and only Valentin Vida is out for them, giving them their best possible chance of a good result.

PSG NEWS

All PSG can do is extend their lead at the top even further but their focus is also on winning their first Champions League. Marco Veratti is suspended while Cavani and Neymar are still injured. They’re joined by Thomas Meunier and Eric Choupo-Moting on the sidelines.

SUMMARY

Even though St Etienne will be happy with their season so far, even their biggest supporter won’t expect them to come away with any points on Sunday. PSG are undoubtedly favourites and over 2.5 goals have come in four of the last five games for both teams. Therefore, backing PSG to win and over 2.5 goals might be wise.
