At the stage of the season where we have seen 14 match weeks of Bundesliga football, we are only three away from the winter break. The two sides that kick off the 15th round of fixtures are Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen and both sides are currently marooned in the middle section of the table. Stuttgart are 13th with 17 points so far while Bayer Leverkusen are 9th on 21 points and they will both be hoping to move up the league.

STATS

  • Stuttgart’s slow decline from being one of Germany’s bigger sides has been highlighted this term as they have only won five of their 14 matches in the league. Their recent form has been much better and with three wins from their last six games, they are starting to build a head of steam. However, they were beaten 1-0 by 17th-placed Werder Bremen in their last one.
  • Bayer Leverkusen have also underperformed in the Bundesliga this season and like their upcoming opponents, have only won five matches. Despite this, they are currently on a run of nine matches unbeaten in the league and they have rapidly moved up the table. They were reduced to 10 men in their last game against Borussia Dortmund but showed fighting spirit to hold onto a 1-1 draw.
  • One of the main struggles for Stuttgart is their lack of a goal scorer. Their leading scorer in the league is Chadrac Akolo with just four goals.
  • Only Robert Lewandowski and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored more Bundesliga goals this season than Bayer Leverkusen forward, Kevin Volland who has nine goals in the league.

HEAD TO HEAD

The last time Stuttgart took three points off Bayer Leverkusen was in April 2010 as they won 2-1 at home. Since then, they have failed to win 12 top flight fixtures against Bayer and they are certainly one of Stuttgart’s bogey teams. Leverkusen have also scored 13 goals in their last four meetings with them, two of which came in the most recent match as they won 2-0 in March. However, Stuttgart have scored more than 2.5 goals in two of the last four fixtures between these two sides and will be confident of scoring on Friday night.

STUTTGART NEWS

A win for Stuttgart could take them into the top half of the Bundesliga as 10th-placed Hannover are sitting with 19 points, just two more than Stuttgart. They have a few players out through injury as Dzenis Burnic, Carlos Mane, Daniel Ginczek and Matthias Zimmerman will all miss the game.

BAYER LEVERKUSEN NEWS

If results were to go their way this weekend, Bayer Leverkusen can move from 9th into the European qualifying positions. They are without two players for the clash as Wendell is serving a long-standing suspension while Charles Aranguiz is injured with a muscular injury.

SUMMARY

With two sides in a similar position in the table facing off this weekend, it has all the makings to be a very tight match. Stuttgart have the benefit of playing at home but they come up against a stronger Leverkusen side who are in great form where they can extend their unbeaten run to 10 matches. Only Bayern Munich and Dortmund have scored more than Bayer Leverkusen this season so there’s no doubt they will score against Stuttgart, it just falls on whether the hosts will be able to respond.
