This weekend has marked the start of the 2018/19 La Liga season however after Sunday night’s fixtures, there is still one game to be played. Atletico travel to Valencia in one of the biggest match-ups of the opening weekend.

STATS

  • Valencia had a great campaign last season as they comfortably secured a place in the top four to ensure they’d be playing Champions League football this term. They enjoyed a decent pre-season, winning three of their six games whilst drawing two and losing one. They eased past Bayer Leverkusen in the final one with a 3-0 scoreline, PSV were the only side to beat them.
  • Atletico had an impressive season in Spain and in Europe as they finished runners-up in La Liga behind Barcelona along with their Europa League triumph. They’ve already played a competitive match which was against Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup last week and they ran out 4-2 winners after extra-time. They won just two of their five pre-season fixtures.
  • Rodrigo was Valencia’s main source of goals last season after netting 16 times in the league. His team-mate, Simone Zaza wasn’t far behind on 13 goals.
  • Tying Antoine Griezmann down to a new contract over the summer was important for Atleti and with 19 goals last term, it’s easy to see why.

HEAD TO HEAD

It’s no secret that Valencia have struggled against Atletico in recent times, Diego Simeone’s side are unbeaten in their last seven meetings with five wins and two draws. In last season’s fixture at the Mestalla, the game ended goalless which was the first 0-0 draw between the two sides in well over five years. Both teams have scored just once in the last five with Valencia’s last goal against Atletico coming in March 2016.

VALENCIA NEWS

A win against a direct top-four rival on the opening day would be brilliant for Valencia but it certainly won’t be easy. Francis Coquelin returned to training this week after injuring his Achilles meaning there are no injury problems for the hosts.

ATLETICO NEWS

To have a realistic chance of winning another title, Atletico must beat the teams in and around them in the table. They are without Lucas Hernandez who is suspended while Kevin Gamiero remains a big doubt.

SUMMARY

Despite Valencia’s home advantage and strong finish last season, Atletico should have too much quality for them and are expected to take all three points back to Madrid. With Rodrigo and Zaza's goalscoring exploits, the hosts will be hoping to score which is why both teams to score looks very likely.
