As many teams prepare for life in the European competitions this season, the qualifiers for the UEFA Europa League are well underway. After the first leg of the first qualifying round, Vasas and Beitar Jerusalem are still very close. The first of the two ties ended 4-3 to Beitar, who were the home side, but with 3 away goals, Vasas are still very much in the hat for the tournament and it could still go either way.

STATS

  • Vasas have won three of their last five games in all competitions which saw them lose out in the final of the Magyar Kupa final in Hungary. They’ve scored 12 in these five games so they haven’t struggled in front of goal but they need to tighten their defence. Their last game was the 4-3 loss to their next opponents but it was a positive result away from home.
  • Beitar Jerusalem have gone one better than their European competitors as they have managed four wins in their last five games. This saw them finish the season 4th in the Israeli Premier League and take a 4-3 lead into this tie. While they won the game, the three away goals they conceded in the first leg might come back to haunt them.
  • Vasas were 3-1 up in the first leg with less than five minutes remaining in the game and they threw away the lead and actually ended up being on the losing team. Georginho opened the scoring early on in the game before Yevhen Pavlov put his side in the lead with a quick brace. Tamas Kulcsar then extended Beitar’s lead and with 10 minutes left they thought the game was won. Former Premier League star Yossi Benayoun pulled a goal back before Idan Vered and Erik Sabo completed a great comeback for the hosts.

VASAS NEWS

It is vital that Vasas make sure they keep a tight defence in this game if they want to stay in the Europa League. They also need to score at least one goal as they are already behind in the tie. With three away goals, they still have huge hope heading into the second leg as just one goal could easily send them through. They don’t have any injuries to worry about so they have a full squad at their disposal.

BEITAR JERUSALEM NEWS

If Beitar Jerusalem can keep a clean sheet, they will be in the hat for the second qualifying round of the Europa League but if they concede just one goal, it could be the end of their European road. They don’t have any injured players either but are going to be massively nervous going into the game knowing that two goals for the hosts will make their task almost impossible.[taem2]

SUMMARY

With the away goals ruling being in play in this tie along with home advantage, Vasas are favourites for the victory across both legs. But with the one-goal lead, Beitar will look to play counter-attacking football, which Vasas will struggle against. It could easily end all square which would more than likely see the hosts proceed to the next round but a clean sheet for the visitors is a real possibility which would see them through. It should be Vasas taking the next step but it could be either side.
